This reader will focus on practical and theoretical issues involved in doing and receiving supervision. You will be introduced to the basics of doing supervision in a variety of situations and settings, and with a range of client populations, as well as to the literature on supervision. While supervision will be considered primarily from a control-mastery and contemporary psychoanalytic perspective, there will be an emphasis on your finding your own supervisory style.

Topics to be considered include: providing an environment that optimizes supervisee learning, culture and gender issues, current trends in the use of technology, confidentiality, ethics and the law, the distinction between supervision and consultation, and evaluation of supervision.

The reader is broken up into 6 different topic areas. Read at least one article of your choice from each topic area. Read the discussion notes and study guide for each topic area at the end of the included document. At the end of this independent study summarize for yourself the most important concepts that impact supervision and what kind of supervisor you want to be. If you would like to receive 6 CEUs for this class: List the articles you have read and send it along with the guidelines you have developed for yourself from the readings to the course instructor Jessica Broitman (drjess@comcast.net). You will then receive a certificate of completion for the self study. Beginning Questions: What kinds of clinical experience have you had? Have you ever been a supervisor? How would you describe your style of supervision? What are the attributes of your favorite supervisors? Your worst supervisors? What did you promise yourself you would never do to as supervisor? The goal of this independent study is for you to develop and think about your ideas about the kind of supervisor you want to be. We will then hit the literature to see what the "Experts" are saying about supervision. Do we agree with them? Why? What research is there to back up the clinical claims?
